Independent electrical retailer Peter Tyson is celebrating its 60th anniversary, having grown from a small television shop in Carlisle into one of the UK’s largest independent hi-fi and AV specialists.

Founded in 1966 by Peter Tyson, the family-run business now operates three showrooms across Carlisle, Workington and Newcastle upon Tyne, alongside a national online and telesales operation, employing more than 75 people.

The retailer has established strong relationships with some of the world’s leading audio manufacturers, having previously ranked as the largest global dealer for both Linn and Naim Audio in certain years, while regularly placing among the top three worldwide for McIntosh.

The business began on West Tower Street in Carlisle, where Peter Tyson opened his first shop after working in television repairs and servicing.

During the early 1970s, the company expanded into hi-fi, initially stocking Japanese brands including Kenwood, National Panasonic and Technics, before introducing specialist British manufacturers such as Arcam and Linn.Peter Tyson group staff short

Around the turn of the millennium, Peter Tyson was also among the first UK hi-fi retailers to begin selling online, helping establish the national customer base it serves today.

In 2017, the retailer relocated to a purpose-built, 30,000 sq ft showroom and distribution centre on Shaddongate in Carlisle. More recently, it opened a new 5,000 sq ft store in Workington in July 2025, while its Newcastle showroom has undergone significant investment in its demonstration facilities.

The Newcastle store now features several dedicated listening rooms, including a Focal Powered by Naim store-in-store and a Bowers & Wilkins demonstration space.

Across its three locations, the retailer places considerable emphasis on allowing customers to experience products before purchasing, with demonstration rooms designed to accommodate everything from entry-level hi-fi systems to high-end installations.

Luke Tyson, Director and Hi-Fi Brand Manager, who represents the third generation of the family business, said: “You can go to high-end hi-fi shops or you can go to entry-level hi-fi shops; there are very few places that can take you from the top of the market to the bottom and back again, and let you hear the difference for yourself.”

The retailer’s product portfolio now includes more than 180 brands, with a dedicated luxury hi-fi section introduced to its website earlier this year.

Alongside its specialist audio business, Peter Tyson remains a major regional electrical retailer, offering televisions from Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense, TCL and other manufacturers, as well as kitchen and laundry appliances from brands including Miele, Smeg, Samsung and LG.

Its growing national appliance operation, Peter Tyson Electricals, also sells products through a dedicated website.

The company continues to invest in customer service, offering nationwide installation services, a remote trade-in scheme and 36-month interest-free finance on eligible purchases.HQ the Carlisle showroom and distribution centre

Mr Tyson said the resurgence of vinyl had also helped introduce younger customers to specialist audio retail.

“In the world of hi-fi, vinyl never really left. What’s been fantastic about the resurgence, though, is that it’s bringing newer generations of music lovers into our showrooms. People buy a record, and then they want to come in and hear it properly.”

The business is now run by the second and third generations of the Tyson family, with all six of the founder’s children having worked for the company over the years.

Reflecting on its history, Mr Tyson said: “My grandfather set a precedent for how customers should be looked after, and every decision we’ve made since has been guided by this principle: the people we hire, the showrooms we build, the brands we work with.

“Buying a television or a hi-fi system should be a pleasure; it isn’t like replacing your boiler! We want every step of it to be enjoyable, from visiting our showrooms to playing a first record at home.”

Looking ahead, the retailer hopes to build greater awareness of its specialist audio offering beyond its traditional customer base in the North of England.

Mr Tyson added: “Hi-fi can be seen from the outside as a bit of a thing of the past, but it really isn’t.

“Whether it’s a turntable or an all-in-one streaming system, beautiful Italian loudspeakers or slim aluminium Danish wireless speakers, we have the products, the expertise and the showrooms.

“Over the next five years we want to take that to a much wider audience and show people just what’s possible.”
