Chinese retail giant JD.com has officially launched its Joybuy platform in the UK, marking a major step in its European expansion and signalling its intent to become a long-term player in the British e-commerce market.

The £30bn business, which is China’s largest retailer by revenue and listed in both the US and Hong Kong, is bringing a broad range of products to UK consumers, spanning consumer electronics, home appliances, beauty, groceries and homewares. The platform also features dedicated brand stores from leading manufacturers including Braun, De’Longhi, BRITA and Bodum.

Joybuy will operate from distribution centres in Milton Keynes and Luton, forming the backbone of a logistics model designed to compete on speed and reliability. At launch, the retailer is offering next-day delivery to around 17 million UK households, with additional same-day delivery available on orders placed before 11am in selected urban areas. Orders placed before 11pm are expected to arrive the following day.

Matthew Nobbs, Managing Director of Joybuy UK, said the company is confident about its growth prospects, highlighting convenience, competitive pricing and a wide product range as key drivers for attracting UK consumers. He also reinforced the company’s long-term commitment to the market, stating that JD.com intends to establish a lasting presence in the UK.

The launch follows JD.com’s decision to withdraw from potential acquisitions of UK retailers Currys in 2024 and Argos in 2025. Instead of entering the market through acquisition, the company has opted to build its own platform, infrastructure and customer base.

JD.com’s UK debut forms part of a wider European rollout, with the Joybuy platform launching simultaneously in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Luxembourg. The expansion builds on the group’s €2.2bn (£1.9bn) acquisition of German electronics retail group Ceconomy, strengthening its supply chain and retail footprint across the region.

The company’s entry into the UK comes at a time of shifting dynamics in the e-commerce sector, with ongoing changes to fulfilment networks and increasing competition around delivery speed and customer experience.
