Independent electrical retailer Hughes has announced plans to close eight of its 18 East Anglia locations, resulting in the loss of around 60 jobs.
The century-old business said the closures form part of a wider strategy to adapt to changing consumer shopping habits, rising operating costs and increasing demand for online services.
The sites scheduled to close at the end of trading on Saturday are Hughes stores in Hunstanton, Wisbech, North Walsham, Dereham, Clacton-on-Sea, Thetford and Diss, along with the company’s delivery depot on Mason Road in Norwich.
Chief Executive Mark Wardell said employees had been informed of the decision and would be supported throughout the consultation process.
“These have not been easy decisions to make,” Mr Wardell said. “Many of the colleagues affected have been with Hughes for a long time and have played a huge part in the success of the business. All will receive the honesty, respect and support they deserve through the difficult process ahead.”
The Norwich depot closure will affect 25 employees. Hughes said those staff members would be able to apply for alternative roles within the business. A further 35 employees will be affected by the store closures.
In a statement, the retailer said it recognised the need to evolve its offering in response to changing customer expectations and the growing popularity of online shopping.
The company plans to invest further in its e-commerce operation while continuing to support its remaining store network across the region.
Hughes will continue trading from its stores in Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth, Beccles, Norwich Hall Road, Bury St Edmunds, Fakenham, King’s Lynn, Ipswich Felixstowe Road, Martlesham and Colchester.
Founded by Frank Hughes in 1921, the business opened its first retail store in Lowestoft in 1928 and has remained one of the UK’s longest-established independent electrical retailers.
Mr Wardell said the restructuring was necessary to secure the long-term future of the company.
“We understand this news will be very upsetting for our teams, but we have acted now to ensure the long-term success of the business,” he added.
