Bira is urging the new government to make good on its promise of change by prioritising the revival of the independent retail sector and high streets across the UK.
CEO of Bira, Andrew Goodacre, recently met with Jonathan Reynolds and the Department for Business and Trade, to discuss the focus on supporting small businesses.
Bira has consistently campaigned for policies that support and nurture independent retailers. This meeting provided a platform for business leaders from various sectors to engage directly with policymakers.
The four priorities outlined by the Secretary include:
- Creating a “Mission-Driven Industrial Strategy”: This strategy aims to boost productivity and promote clean and green energy initiatives.
- Supporting Small Businesses: Emphasis will be placed on improving cash flow for small businesses and reforming the British Business Bank.
- Improving UK Trade: Efforts will be concentrated on enhancing export capabilities and opportunities.
- Ensuring Fair Work Practices: The focus here is on improving working terms, conditions, and job security.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the discussion, Mr Goodacre (left) highlighted the importance of reducing operational costs for independent retailers through business rates reform, addressing retail crime, and fostering investment in high streets.
He said: “It is great to hear about the four priorities and even better to know that supporting small business is one of those priorities. I am looking forward to further discussions to make this a reality for indie retailers.
“It is great for Bira to have been invited to such an early meeting. We will be following up by reaching out to the business ministers once they have been announced.” he added.
Last week, following the result of the general election, Bira reiterated its key priorities for the new government, including: Continued investment in local high streets, addressing issues such as parking availability and cost; review of the cycle to work scheme to ensure retailers also benefit; a coordinated plan to reduce wastage in the retail sector; and a review of regulations to prevent disproportionate impact on smaller retailers.
Mr Goodacre added: “As always, actions will speak louder than words and Bira’s work to engage and influence government policy under Labour begins today.”
