Iconic portable turntable gets a modernised reissue

As part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, Audio-Technica has brought back a fan-favourite record player: the Sound Burger, now with modernisations including Bluetooth wireless audio for the modern era but with the same retro flair to delight any vinyl lover.

After merging a pop art style with high-fidelity audio some 40 years ago, the Sound Burger returns with the same unmistakable aesthetic that made it such a smash hit and an icon of the 1980s vinyl scene.

While it remains faithful to its roots, it’s packing a world of new tech that will appeal to any music fan in the modern age. Wireless connectivity over Bluetooth is built in, and there’s even a USB-C port for charging.

The updated Sound Burger boasts a belt-drive system that plays 33-1/3 and 45 RPM records, allowing the choice between singles and LPs. To ensure that the Sound Burger is as portable as ever, it even uses a dynamic balance system that sees pressure applied to the stylus via a spring, alongside a DC motor that keeps everything running smoothly during playback.

While the Sound Burger is a portable design, the inclusion of an RCA audio cable as well as Bluetooth means that it can be hooked up to a home stereo or speaker system either wired or wirelessly.

Also out now alongside this, Audio-Technica has unveiled the limited edition AT-LP2022 turntable. The Shibata stylus that comes with each turntable ensures that it would be an asset to any audiophile’s collection.

A stylish 30 mm-thick, high-density clear acrylic chassis reduces resonance and reveals the belt-drive motor – highlighting the turntable’s analogue sound. As a high-end model, the AT-LP2022 has a pure phono-level output that can be connected to a phono input or dedicated phono pre-amp.

Visible through the eye-catching acrylic, the built-in motor is sensor-monitored to allow the LP2022 to maintain a consistently accurate rotational speed of 33-1/3 or 45 RPM. When combined with the high-isolation, height-adjustable feet, it produces the ideal platform for all your favourite LPs.

A result of 60 years of phono cartridge development, the clear-bodied Shibata stylus fitted to the AT-VM95 cartridge can pick up ultra-high frequencies, allowing you to discover sounds you’ve never heard before. However, adjustable VTA (vertical tracking angle) and dynamic anti-skate control on the carbon-fibre tonearm ensure that the turntable can be used with alternative cartridges of various heights and weights.
