Home security just got smarter

CCTV security is becoming smarter and more readily available all the time.

This new smarter technology isn’t just for commercial applications such as large offices, warehouses, public places, shops, pubs and car parks anymore, but is affordable enough to help keep your home and business safe. Swann is at the forefront of developing this new wave of affordably priced ‘plug and play’ CCTV solutions that are changing the way we look at our home security.

There are three main types of smart home security cameras exist giving consumers the flexibility to choose features that are relevant to their needs and price range. The first is ‘wire- free’ with cameras that run off rechargeable batteries. The positives with wire-free are ease of set, balanced against the need for occasional recharging which takes the camera offline for a period, but this can be mitigated with a solar charging panel. With wire-free devices, the need to preserve battery charge for as long as possible means users have access to short term (usually less than a minute) streaming and the recording of short clips rather than longer or constant streaming.

The second type of camera technology is ‘powered Wi-Fi’. Powered Wi-Fi cameras are similar to wire-free in that they connect to the internet via a local Wi-Fi connection but they differ in that they connect to power via a wall plug. This means they are easy to set up, do not need occasional recharging but it can sometimes be inconvenient to have to find a power plug to connect cameras to, particularly when mounted outside.

The third and final type of camera system, is the more traditional form of CCTV connected by wires to a control box, such as a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) or Network Video Recorder (NVR). Each camera connected to such a system has a wired cable that transmits video back to the recording box. The internet connection is enabled by connecting the recording box to a router, usually via Ethernet cable. Wired systems are harder to install but are very effective for larger premises requiring multiple cameras and video streams. They are also more suited to regular and longer form video streaming.

The home security systems are smarter and more connected than ever with the arrival of IoT (Internet of Things). Consumers can now remotely control their door locks, lights, thermostats and integrate CCTV security systems seamlessly to monitor and prevent unwanted activity from happening.

Over the past year keeping an eye on the home or business has become easier with integrations to smart home assistants such as Google Assistant and Alexa. With a simple swipe of a smartphone or a voice command to a smart device, consumers can now review their security footage instantly and have the flexibility to customise their CCTV security to suit their needs.

New technology advancements have made artificial intelligence in the form of smart analytics readily available within premium Swann security systems free of charge. Features such as facial recognition, line crossing and perimeter intrusion a standard feature to keep the property are safe and secure. Some of Swann’s new offering of CCTV cameras have spotlights, floodlights and sirens built-in, turning on when motion and heat is detected. It’s true security as users are alerted to what’s happening, can see live video of the action and know that unwanted activity is likely to be prevented by the lights and siren.
