Long rumoured, and now finally revealed, Sony has finally lifted the veil of secrecy from its first True RGB televisions, the BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II, reports Steve May. And, by way of a surprise, Sony has also announced the high-end BRAVIA Theatre Trio wireless sound system.
The group form the centrepiece of the brand’s latest drive to recreate the cinema experience at home through advances in colour reproduction, HDR brightness and immersive sound.
ERT attended their official unveiling, at Sony Europe HQ in Weybridge, and was suitably impressed by their picture prowess, and premium design.
The BRAVIA 9 II in particular is one of the most impactful HDR screens we’ve seen. Demos were striking. Bright scenes retained vivid saturation without appearing harsh, while darker movie material exhibited impressive depth and subtle shadow detail. Sony’s long-standing expertise in professional mastering monitors was evident throughout the demonstrations.
Central to its new True RGB panel innovation is proprietary RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro technology. Unlike conventional Mini LED televisions, which use a backlight filtered into colour, the BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II employ independently driven red, green and blue LEDs. Sony says this allows the sets to achieve the largest colour volume in the company’s history, while also improving viewing angles, contrast and brightness precision.
Both models share a broad feature set aimed squarely at premium home cinema buyers. They support Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced, alongside Sony’s My Cinema mode and Ambient Optimisation technology, which automatically adjusts picture and audio performance according to room conditions and seating position. Studio Calibrated modes for Netflix, Prime Video and Sony Pictures Core are also included.
Both TVs feature full-range speaker systems with AI-powered Voice Zoom 3 dialogue enhancement and Sony’s latest 3D Surround Upscaling processing.
The BRAVIA 9 II sits at the top of the new line-up and introduces several features not found on the BRAVIA 7 II. These include RGB Triluminos Max and Luminance Booster Pro processing for greater brightness control and colour precision. The flagship model also gains Sony’s new Immersive Black Screen Pro treatment, a particularly effective glare-resistant screen coating, developed with input from Sony Pictures Entertainment, to preserve black depth and shadow detail in brighter living rooms.
The BRAVIA 9 II also benefits from Acoustic Multi-Audio+ with up-firing beam tweeters designed to create a more expansive soundstage. Screen sizes range from 65-inches through to an enormous 115-inch model, aimed firmly at luxury home cinema installations.
The more accessible BRAVIA 7 II retains the core True RGB platform, albeit with fewer dimming zones, and less HDR luminosity. It’s available in screen sizes from 50- to 98-inches.
One slight disappointment is that both True RGB models only offer 4k 120Hz high frame rate gameplay support on two of their four HDMI inputs, which might put off committed gamers. They also lack Freely.
A natural upsell to the True RGB screen, the BRAVIA Theatre Trio is a premium wireless home cinema system. The three-speaker package uses Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology to generate up to 24 phantom speakers around the room, creating a large-scale surround effect without the complexity of a traditional AV receiver setup.
The Theatre Trio supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced playback, and can be expanded with optional wireless subwoofers and rear speakers. Sony has also introduced a new Direct Connect feature, allowing compatible BRAVIA televisions to connect wirelessly with additional speakers and subwoofers without the need for a soundbar.
The BRAVIA 9 II is available in 65-, 75-, 85- and 115-inch screen sizes, priced from £3,499 up to £22,999. The BRAVIA 7 II comes in 50-, 55-, 65-, 75-, 85- and 98-inch variants, starting at £1,899, and scaling to £6,999..
The BRAVIA Theatre Trio is priced at £2,000, or £2,800 bundled with additional rear speakers.
