Sirius Buying Group celebrated its 25th anniversary during its annual conference in Tenerife, marking a quarter-century of supporting independent electrical and kitchen retailers.
Founded in 2001 by four independent retailers, Sirius was established to help members collaborate more effectively and strengthen their position in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Since then, the group has grown to include more than 175 members and a network of approved suppliers and service providers.
Over the past 25 years, Sirius has expanded beyond its original focus on white goods to encompass major domestic appliances, small domestic appliances and kitchen retailing. The group’s development has mirrored wider changes in the market, with many members broadening their offer to include kitchens, SDA and lifestyle-led retail concepts.
Commenting on the milestone, Steve Jones, Managing Director of Sirius Buying Group, said: “Reaching our 25th anniversary is a significant milestone for Sirius. From day one, our objective has been to help independent retailers thrive in an increasingly competitive and fast-changing market, while retaining their true independence and local identity that make them unique.
“Over the past 25 years, we’ve worked closely with both our members and approved suppliers to create opportunities, drive growth and strengthen the independent retail sector. We really believe that when independent retailers succeed, it creates stronger partnerships, greater value for suppliers and a healthier, more resilient industry for everyone. That mission remains as important today as it was when Sirius was founded.”
Throughout its history, Sirius members have navigated significant industry challenges, including Brexit-related disruption, the Covid-19 pandemic, supply chain issues and rising operating costs. The group says communication and collaboration across its network have helped members respond to changing market conditions and identify new business opportunities.
In recent years, Sirius has also expanded the range of services available to members beyond traditional buying group benefits, including support for extended warranties, merchant services, WEEE collections, business insurance and other operational services.
The buying group has additionally strengthened its partnership network, including a recent agreement with Bira that provides qualifying members with access to legal, HR, finance and training support.
