With colder months just around the corner, the Rainy Day Trust is urging colleagues across the home improvement sector to take action now to reduce energy use and household bills — before temperatures drop.
As part of its proactive ‘Let’s Save Energy’ campaign, launched in 2021, the charity is offering free energy-saving assistance packages to eligible individuals, complementing its annual winter fuel aid programme which provides emergency support during exceptionally cold weather.
The initiative focuses on long-term solutions to help households cut down on energy use, save money, and reduce their environmental impact.
Rainy Day Trust CEO, Bryan Clover, explained: “What people need is a longer-term solution that helps them to reduce energy usage and, therefore, keep energy bills lower permanently. The additional benefit, of course, is that by using less energy, you also reduce your carbon footprint, which helps us to hit our own ESG commitment.”
The ‘Let’s Save Energy’ assistance package includes:
- A box of LED lightbulbs, offering savings of up to £3 per bulb per year by using around 40% less energy than low-energy bulbs and over 80% less than halogen bulbs.
- Radiator reflectors, which reflect heat back into the room and reduce the amount of energy needed to maintain a comfortable temperature.
- ECO shower heads, reducing both water consumption and the energy needed to heat it.
- SMART thermostats, where appropriate, to help households accurately control heating — even when away from home.
In cases where a new appliance is required, the Trust can also provide the most energy-efficient model possible within budgetary constraints. Usual Rainy Day Trust eligibility criteria apply.
Mr Clover added: “Please encourage staff to get in touch if this would help them. We have posters available to raise awareness in the workplace, which we’re happy to email across.”
The charity is working with industry partners to deliver the scheme, including Croydex, which has donated ECO shower heads.
“We’re extremely grateful to Croydex for their ongoing support — and if other companies would like to get involved, we’d love to hear from them.”
