Dyson is launching a new servicing scheme in the UK designed to restore ageing vacuum cleaners and help customers keep their machines running for longer.

Called Dyson Total Restore, the new service will launch on 14 October, with the UK becoming the first market in the world to receive it.

Announced at the company’s Dyson Unveiled event in Berlin, the scheme was described as a “spa day for your vacuum” and will see machines undergo an extensive 70-point health check by Dyson engineers.

The service will include tests of areas such as airflow and battery performance, with engineers replacing components that are affecting the performance of the machine using genuine Dyson parts.

Rollers within the motorised cleaner head and filters are among the components that can be replaced, before the vacuum undergoes a comprehensive deep clean.

Dyson said the aim is to return machines with performance restored to a level comparable with when they were new.

“By combining preventative maintenance with expert servicing, Dyson Total Restore helps keep machines operating at their best while supporting more sustainable long-term ownership,” the company said.

The service will cost £99, including collection and delivery of the customer’s vacuum.

Repair rather than replace

The launch forms part of a wider push by Dyson to expand its after-sales and repair services, with the manufacturer also introducing technical support at its physical stores.

Similar to the support desks found in Apple Stores, Dyson engineers will be available to diagnose problems and carry out repairs on products.

The company said around 80 per cent of its most common repairs will be possible in-store, with an average repair time of approximately 15 minutes.

For more complicated problems, Dyson is also introducing its “Never Without Your Dyson” initiative.

If a customer’s product cannot be repaired within 72 hours, they will be offered a temporary Dyson product to use until their own machine is returned.

The initiative is expected to be introduced across Dyson’s physical stores globally.

Smarter after-sales support

Dyson is also planning to make greater use of its MyDyson app to identify potential problems before they result in a repair.

Using data from sensors and diagnostics built into compatible products, the app will be able to provide personalised maintenance advice.

For example, owners could be warned if their cordless vacuum’s charging dock has been positioned somewhere excessively hot, which could accelerate battery degradation.

Dyson is also adding personalised onboarding for its latest robot vacuum cleaners through the app, with customers receiving advice tailored to their machine and home.

The new services represent a greater focus on extending product lifespans and after-sales support at a time when repairability and sustainability are becoming increasingly important considerations for both consumers and the electrical retail sector.
