Colin M Smith Ltd has announced the closure of its long-established Kirriemuir store, ending a remarkable chapter in the independent retailer’s history that spans more than six decades.
The announcement was made by Jonathen Smith, Director at Colin M Smith Ltd, who shared the news in a LinkedIn post, calling it a “challenging” but necessary business decision.
“My grandfather became manager of this store in 1961, before taking over the running of it in 1971,” Mr Smith wrote. “So over 60 years meant it was not a straightforward decision.”
The closure comes as the business continues to strengthen its position at its flagship Forfar store, located just six miles from Kirriemuir. The Forfar site offers a larger product range, on-site parking, and the same customer service standards that have become synonymous with the Colin M Smith name.
“There is little room for sentiment in business,” Mr Smith acknowledged. “It was a decision that needed to be made, while continuing to give the same high level of service to the good people of Kirrie and the surrounding area.”
Balancing the closure, he also announced an expansion into Dundee, where the company has secured a new retail premises in Hawkhill Court, Mid Wynd, just off the Hawkhill.
“We are very excited to be giving the people of Dundee the chance to have a choice when it comes to home electricals, and getting advice and the personal touch that they cannot get from the multiples,” he added. “We will be open to trade and public.”
Mr Smith invited customers, from those planning new kitchens to businesses sourcing televisions for bars, to reach out as the new store prepares to open. Further updates will follow as the Dundee location takes shape.
“Sometimes, you have to take a step back to move two steps forward,” he concluded.
