On top of decades of successful work to vastly improve the efficiency of appliances, manufacturers are also hard at work, behind the scenes, reducing their carbon footprint throughout their operations.

With an estimated 188 million appliances in the UK’s 28 million homes, their collective performance can make a vital contribution to the nation’s net zero goals.

AMDEA Chief Executive, Paul Hide, said: “We all need to think about the environmental impacts of what we do, including buying and using appliances. Manufacturers have developed ever more efficient appliances – and consumers can use this tech to help save money and minimise environmental impact. In the background, the industry is also cutting its carbon footprint at every turn. Great retailers will be letting their customers know all this.”

AMDEA’s new sustainability content features the first of a planned series of videos showcasing how top brands are pursuing carbon neutrality. First up, Triton Showers and Numatic showcase how their companies are pursuing carbon efficiency on site with materials, products and packaging, and beyond their factory gates, with overseas suppliers of materials, logistics and downstream retail channels.

Under the spotlight for carbon reduction are design, manufacture and distribution, as well as recyclable packaging, extending lifespan, repurposing materials and parts, and refurbishing returned appliances to lend them a second life.

Across the board, manufacturers have extensive carbon reduction programmes in place. They have successfully developed ways to incorporate recycled materials into appliances, while also tackling energy supplies – solar panels or renewables, and zero waste to landfill policies for sites.  Long and short-haul transport and packaging – whether pallets or cardboard — are all scrutinised to reduce embedded carbon, with all savings audited annually.

Further ‘behind the scenes’ videos are already in production to inform retailers and arm them with the information on how leading brands are aiming to contribute to sustainable homes.
