Sony has announced that its 2026 line of high-end TVs will debut under the banner of ‘True RGB’, reports Steve May.

Details on specific models, screen sizes, specifications and prices have yet to be released, but the company is keen to establish its own proprietary take on what appears to be the latest entry into the RGB Mini LED screen wars.

While there seems to be a general consensus from manufacturers that RGB Mini LED is a potential challenger to OLED, there’s no clear agreement on the terminology used to describe the tech. Hisense, Samsung and TCL all have their own spin. This will potentially dilute its impact on consumers, and require a good deal of shop floor guidance.

What we do know so far is that Sony True RGB TVs will use independently controlled red, green, and blue light sources (diodes), able to deliver wider colour, greater brightness, and the larger colour volume than any Sony TV to date.

Sony previewed its RGB LED display technology at IFA 2025, confirming that it covers 99 per cent of the DCI-P3 colour space and approximately 90 per cent of the BT.2020 colour standard, and is capable of a peak HDR brightness of 4000 nits.

For buyers, that means a picture that looks more dimensional, natural and cinematically accurate in real-world viewing environments, be they bright rooms or dark cinemas. Off axis viewing is also said to be improved.

The company has released an image of its True RGB backlight, compared to a conventional Mini LED backlight, to drive home the point.

The scant technical information on offer describes True RGB as the result of a proprietary optical structure with precision backlight control, controlled by a new Sony-developed RGB backlight driver.

It’s hailed as an evolution of the first RGB backlight shown by Sony,  in the QUALIA 005 released in 2004, and the Backlight Master Drive technology which debuted in 2016.

More details on Sony’s True RGB launch is expected over the coming weeks.
