Netgem has introduced the Pleio, the first standalone streaming device to support Freely, the new broadband-delivered live TV platform backed by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and the U network. Retailing for £99, the gadget aims to tempt buyers looking to upgrade ageing TVs with a new smart TV OS, writes Steve May, and it allows older screens to be relocated to rooms which may lack a traditional TV aerial point.

Compact and Android TV-powered, the Freely Pleio aggregates public-service broadcaster channels and on-demand apps into a unified interface, delivered entirely over IP.

The consumer proposition is straightforward: Plug in HDMI, connect to Wi-Fi, and Freely is ready to run. The puck also supports popular subscription services, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+ and Paramount+  via the Google Play Store.

The Netgem gadget may not be much larger than a drinks coaster, but the spec is impressive. The Pleio supports 4K UHD with HDR10, with Dolby Atmos passthrough, making it a good partner for those with home cinema systems and Dolby Atmos capable TVs. Wireless connectivity covers Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0.

ERT has had an early sample of the Pleio device and has been impressed with both its ease of use, and its overall performance. UHD image quality from BBC iPlayer and Netflix is very sharp[ and dyanmic, while its multichannel sound will impress home cinema fans.

The Pleio experience also incorporates a Pleio 150 FAST channel bundle, plus a well-stocked cloud gaming portal. The unit ships with an X-Box style Bluetooth gamepad.

Both the FAST channels and cloud games are available as part of an initial three month trial, but after that require a monthly £9.99 subscription to access.  ISP-bundled versions vary by provider, with PLEIO features included as part of relevant service packages.
