In a landmark partnership to accelerate the UK’s transition to net zero, The Appliance Recycling Group and sustainability firm, Bloom ESG have announced a joint initiative to develop and launch the UK’s first certified carbon certificate programme based on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and re-use operations.

This pioneering initiative aims to generate high-integrity, independently certified carbon certificates, technically known as ‘insets’ from The Appliance Recycling Group’s CENELEC-accredited preparing-for-reuse and logistics operations based in Birmingham. The certificates will be based on avoided emissions from extending product lifecycles—an approach underpinned by the re-use of more than 60,000 EEE and WEEE appliances per year.

“Our partnership is founded on a shared vision: to make carbon savings tangible, measurable, and certifiable at scale,” said James Farmer of The Appliance Recycling Group. “By combining our expertise, we are unlocking new pathways for climate action and reframing how circular economy achievements are communicated—credibly and practically.”

Each carbon certificate will represent one tonne of COe avoided and is backed by an ISO 14064 certified methodology and third-party verification in line with international standards. The programme will feature full digital traceability, ensuring transparency, accountability, and integrity in every issued certificate. Inset certificates will be managed and retired through Bloom’s dedicated carbon inset registry to avoid double counting.

“This collaboration is not just about providing clear incentives to encourage technology re-use — it’s about system change,” said Sebastian Foot of Bloom ESG. “We’re building a model that rewards circular practices and empowers organisations of all sizes to contribute to net zero in a meaningful way.”

As the voluntary carbon market matures, demand for verifiable, locally relevant certificates that are generated within corporate value chains is growing. The Appliance Recycling Group and Bloom ESG aim to meet that demand with a UK-first offering built on innovation, impact, and trust.

The pilot phase is scheduled to launch in May 2025, with initial carbon certificates expected to be issued by September 2025.
