Sony makes 3D viewing personal | Back |

Sony is going a step further in 3D viewing by cutting out all distractions with its HMZ-T1 personal 3D viewer.
Unveiled at the IFA exhibition in Berlin by Sony chairman, CEO and president Sir Howard Stringer and due to come to the UK in November retailing from around £800, it is said to offer a new 3D viewing style that gives users “the most intimate and immersive 3D experience with a large, movie theatre-like virtual screen”.
It is, in fact, a world first - a wearable headset with twin Oled displays and simulated 5.1 surround sound designed to immerse the user in movies or games. The headset uses Virtualphones technology to create an audio field that sounds as if speakers are all around the user.
Sony applied an Oled display and semiconductor silicon drive technology to develop the 0.7in high-definition Oled panels and it claims the organic panels have a super fast response time of just 0.01 milliseconds, particularly useful for sports fans and gamers.
The two Oled screens are independent, displaying HD video independently thus eliminating cross-talk and blurring for more comfortable 3D viewing.
The horizontal viewing angle of the headset has been extended to 45 degrees – this, said Sony, simulates a real 750in movie theatre screen at a virtual viewing distance of 20 metres.
Said home video category marketing manager James Forrester: “Our goal was to recreate the cinema experience in an immersive, personal headset. The clarity of sound and picture that the Personal 3D Viewer is able to deliver makes it just like a mini-cinema that’s just for you.”
At IFA, Sony’s executive deputy president Kazuo Hirai revealed that Sony has brought together its online services for music, video and games under a new name – the Sony Entertainment Network.
The “powered by Qriocity” label has gone and video-on-demand has been renamed Video Unlimited and the music service simply Music Unlimited.
It is also planned to expand Music Unlimited, which has a global catalogue of more than 10 million songs, to other Sony devices including Walkman.
“Through Sony Entertainment Network we can provide everything that Sony customers value – and want – in a convenient, comprehensive manner that is uniquely Sony in its presentation and delivery,” said Mr Hirai.
