Sales of 3D TVs have gone through the 40 per cent barrier for the first time, according to Currys and PC World.

The retailer is also predicting that sales of 3D TV sets will peak this week – boosted by the broadcasting of Strictly Come Dancing in 3D on Saturday.

Two in every five TVs sold are now 3D models as pricing moved down to the mainstream market. Last month, Currys and PC World launched its Logik 3D TV which it claimed was the first set of its kind to be priced at just under £350.

The retailers also revealed that home cinema sales have risen “significantly”, with Currys and PC World recording 83 per cent year-on-year growth.

“Consumers are upgrading their home entertainment tech by taking advantage of some fantastic deals on the most covetable TVs and cinema systems around, with 3DTVs really taking off,” said Phil Samuels, category director at Currys and PC World parent company Dixons Retail.

“Strictly is one of Britain’s best loved shows and the final is set to be a momentous occasion – the perfect excuse to snap up a 3D TV set ahead of Christmas."
